This recording, by Anton Karas was taken from the sountrack of The Third Man. The film was released in 1949 by British Lion Films.

Thrughout the years, when tourists visit Vienna, they make for The Cafe Mozart where Anton Karas performed the Harry Lime Theme and The Cafe Mozart Waltz in the film. Over the years he was requested to perform these pieces.

There have been re-recordings from time to time and in addition the original recording was re-released. This 1949 recording is the definative version, however later versions did not have the flavour of this version.

The film features some unusial camera angles, for the time and these techniques were used later in some psycological thrillers.

The sewer sequence was actually shot in the Viennese sewers and no stand-ins were used, although itt was recently suggested that Orson Welles wanted a stand-in for the sequence.

There were a couple of radio plays of the film that were included with the bonus material of the DVD.

From 1959 until 1965, there was a popular TV series based on the novel, by Grahame Grene who also wrote the screenplay for the film, directed by Carol Reed.
